GPS … Check Your Direction
Every time we go to Dallas we are usually carrying three GPSs. One in the car, one on Steve’s phone, and one on my iPad . Many times we have used three GPSs, and they have taken us to sights unknown. We recognize things, but still are unsure. New roads, under construction , new businesses … there is always something different. We think we know the way, but we find ourselves in situations lost and confused.
The problem is we have never taken the time to sit down and learn the use of the GPS correctly or thoroughly. We don’t use it often enough to feel completely confident in it. We fool around with it when we are in trouble, or at the last minute when we think “Oh, we can use the GPS”! So, it ends up us using our own knowledge, going way out of the way, and ending up fussing or frustrated because it has taken us one hour out of the way … and the utmost humiliation: calling our daughter and asking for directions/help.
That’s what God, I am sure, thinks when He sees us using the LWG … Living Word of God. He sees us in trouble, scrambling at the last minute to figure out how to use it; we depend on our own knowledge, then we find ourselves way off course.
Francis Chan used the illustration of the GPS when we misstep or get off course because of a bad decision. At that moment we hear a voice (is it Siri), “Recalculating, recalculating, recalculating.”
The great thing to remember in all of God’s process with us is that his purpose in our lives, in everything that happens to us, is to increase our joy. That is what God is after. You cannot read the Scriptures without seeing that his intention for men is that men should live in a continual sense of joy, of peace, of mirth and merriment and gladness of heart. That is what He has in mind. He knows the steps it takes to bring it about. And this is what He moves toward. His Word will avoid our missteps often by echoing, “Recalculating, recalculating.”
