There have been several times lately that I have been reminded that we are salt and light in our world today. Each and every day there are those that are looking for the Savior but don’t know where He is to be found. That is where we come in. We are to be the hands and feet of the Holy Father in this world … a world desperately looking for the answers in making life itself make sense.
Sunday, our Bible study teacher admitted that he had road rage, or a form thereof. He humorously described his daily battle with drivers who unknowingly, or knowingly, cut him off at the pass. (I could relate because I ride with one who struggles with the same “illness”). His license plate reads “TIEVOM.” “What is that,” you say? When read in someone’s rear view mirror it says … MOVE IT! He is a serious proponent of courteous and skilled driving. One day, he was ready to drive over one very distracted driver when he noticed she was singing and praising the Lord while she was passing her time in her car. Yes, he repented and vowed to be a courteous driver who spent his time in the car more focused on the Lord than on traffic.
My wife told me of her experience going through a drive-thru window at a fast food restaurant. She was in a hurry but was surprisingly taken with the manner in which the drive-thru operator took her order, smiled, gave her her coffee (I think there was a chicken biscuit in there somewhere), wished her a “blessed day,” and sent her on her way. So moved by the entire experience, she forgot to pay! Driving off, she realized her mistake. Bonita was pressed for time, but knew she must go back and be the same kind of witness to that lady as she had been to her. She drove her car back, drove back in line, waited through the line until she was back again at the window. The lady smiled, told her that it had been taken care of, and blessed her for coming back to pay. Their eyes met. Yes, this was an example of salt and light. They both knew of the Lord they served. Both were blessed that day.
“When you have done it unto the least of these, my brothers, you have done it unto me.” These are Christ’s words. Taking a few moments from our day to spread the love of Christ is our challenge. Our actions speak volumes. The principals of Christ can change this time in which we live. How can we hold tight to ourselves the One thing that could transform and overcome the world?
You are the world’s seasoning, to make it tolerable. If you lose your flavor, what will happen to the world? And you yourselves will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the world’s light—a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light! Let it shine for all; let your good deeds glow for all to see, so that they will praise your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:13-16 Living Bible (TLB)
