I suppose every one of us has found ourselves in “a rock and a hard place.” I know I have … in fact, I have been caught in one for a few years now.
By definition that phrase means “difficulty, faced with a choice between two unsatisfactory options.”
The phrase has many origins. I had been told a number of years ago that it describes a young eagle. As the eagle (I guess eaglet) grew it would seek a place in the craggy mountain range, a rocky place). The eagle would place its beak in between the tight rocky places in the mountain rocks and break off part of the beak. You see, its beak normally grows in a circular motion and cuts off the pathway for water and air. If the eagle would not break off the end of the beak it could suffocate and die. So, the pain and discomfort of breaking the beak actually caused the eagle to breathe and live. Thus, for me, that which hurt most (cancer, chemo, back injuries) brought life … between a rock and hard place: CANCER!
So Steve, where’s the song for the day. All of this brought the words to a wonderful song to sing today:
A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,
A wonderful Savior to me;
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock,
Where rivers of pleasure I see.
Refrain:
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock,
That shadows a dry, thirsty land;
He hideth my life in the depths of His love,
And covers me there with His hand,
And covers me there with His hand.
A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,
He taketh my burden away,
He holdeth me up and I shall not be moved,
He giveth me strength as my day. Refrain
With numberless blessings each moment He crowns,
And filled with His fullness divine,
I sing in my rapture, oh, glory to God!
For such a Redeemer as mine. Refrain
When clothed with His brightness transported I rise
To meet Him in clouds of the sky,
His perfect salvation, His wonderful love,
I’ll shout with the millions on high. Refrain
(Amen to this!!!!)
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock,
That shadows a dry, thirsty land;
He hideth my life in the depths of His love,
And covers me there with His hand,
And covers me there with His hand.
