I wrote this after receiving the following Facebook post from my daughter, Stephanie, on the occasion of my grandson, Jake’s 11th birthday. She wrote: “Get out the Kleenex. Instead of gifts, he (Jake) asked for money to give to the American Cancer Society in honor of his Papa.” Wow!!
Some days lately I feel like I have no tears left to cry. The well is dry. Now, if you have known me for long you know that I am kind of a crybaby. I cry for lots of stuff … even McDonald’s commercials and others in the past. Lots of things make me cry. Ha! Some might say I have made them cry more than I have cried.
This past season, since we discovered terminal brain cancer, the tears have flowed. Tears of sadness, of blessing, of gratefulness because of wonderful expressions from so many of you. Overwhelming tears of the unexpected. Tears of fear, uncertainty, and many more. Tears from family and friends with compassion, tears of sadness, tears of deep, deep love.
“Cry me a river” they say? Well, I think I have cried an ocean. I wept today of the news that friend Rick Warren’s son, Matthew, took his life. I can’t even imagine it! And the tears flowed. So sad.
God’s Words make me cry. They move me greatly, especially at “I need a Word from You today, Lord” times.
The references to tears are abundant in scripture. Lots of powerful references.
And then I was reminded of this verse in Psalm 126. It made sense about my tears because out of our tears we find joy and songs. The result of my tears is songs, hymns, and scriptural songs. That may be why I’ve been singing so much.
Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.
Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.
Psalms 126:5-6
Let’s weep together today and sing songs of joy.
This is My commandment
That you love one another
That your joy may be full
This is my commandment
That you love one another
That your joy may be full
That your joy may be full
That your joy may be full
This is my commandment
That you love one another
That your joy may be full
