Walking has been difficult for me for over a year now. The cancer surprise came out of the blue because we had been dealing with back, leg, and foot issues for a long time including six surgeries on my back, a fusion surgery, and the residual chronic nerve pain in my right side to my big toe. That pain continues to stress my body significantly. This morning, like a lightning bolt, I remembered and sang in bed the old wonderful hymn “Footsteps of Jesus.” And, yes! That is exactly what I am trying to do … walk in His steps. My desire is to walk in the footprints of Jesus. But I have found it tempting to take a shortcut and to walk the road of worry, the highway of pity, the HOV of loneliness, and the circle of anxiety. I have to remember my pain is nothing compared to the pain the Lord experienced down that Via Dolorosa for my sins. I can only hope that He will be glorified as I walk down this current pathway. His Word is my GPS in finding direction and strength for the journey.
Sing with me this song today. Consider the road you are on. Seek to walk in His steps. (Note: It’s a long song, but there are some great lyrics here.)
Sweetly, Lord, have we heard Thee calling,
Come, follow Me!
And we see where Thy footprints falling
Lead us to Thee.
REFRAIN
Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus
Where’er they go.
Though they lead o’er the cold, dark mountains,
Seeking His sheep;
Or along by Siloam’s fountains,
Helping the weak.
REFRAIN
Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus
Where’er they go.
If they lead through the temple holy,
Preaching the Word;
Or in homes of the poor and lowly,
Serving the Lord.
REFRAIN
Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus
Where’er they go.
Though, dear Lord, in Thy pathway keeping,
We follow Thee;
Through the gloom of that place of weeping,
Gethsemane!
REFRAIN
Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus
Where’er they go.
If Thy way and its sorrows bearing,
We go again,
Up the slope of the hillside, bearing
Our cross of pain.
REFRAIN
Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus
Where’er they go.
By and by, through the shining portals,
Turning our feet,
We shall walk, with the glad immortals,
Heav’n’s golden street.
REFRAIN
Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus
Where’er they go.
Then, at last, when on high He sees us,
Our journey done,
We will rest where the steps of Jesus
End at His throne.
REFRAIN
Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus
Where’er they go.
