I went to the movie with my father this week in Fort Worth and saw Do You Believe? This movie is made by the God’s Not Dead people, and it was fabulous. It was strong strong strong . . . the most evangelical, overtly Christian movie I have ever seen . . . well done and powerful. In it were actors we have known in other, past roles including Lee Majors (Six Million Dollar Man), Cybill Shepherd (Moonlighting), Mira Sorvino, Sean Astin, and more.
I love movies. We see them all. When I was growing up the closest thing to “Christian films” were the Billy Graham films. Do you remember these: Two A Penny, The Hiding Place, The Restless Ones, Time to Run, Joni, The Prodigal, and For Pete’s Sake?
Following the huge influence of Passion of the Christ, there has been a large wave of “faith-based films” in recent years. This was followed with movies like Facing the Giants, Fireproof, Moms Night Out, and most recently Left Behind. Plus, about a year or so ago I encouraged others to see The Song, taken from Song of Solomon. It was extraordinary.
So, why would I recommend seeing this movie you ask? There is no question the gospel was clear and intentional. It clearly reminded me of the reasons I believe what I believe. Sadly, the most important thing to me was that the JOY of knowing the Lord was not portrayed. As Christians, we are oftentimes painted as sour, negative individuals who appear to have been vaccinated with pickle juice. Christ is ever so present in our daily lives and should be artistically and positively presented by Christians . . . in film and off. THE JOY OF THE LORD IS OUR STRENGTH!
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. (John 10:10 NASB)
